Several temples across India have introduced dress codes, with some supporting it and some opposing it. The 15th-century Virupaksha Temple in Hampi could be the latest temple joining the list of places of worship where devotees will have to follow a dress code. It is learnt that the temple administration has sought the government nod to implement a dress code.

Prakash Rao, Executive Officer, Virupaksha Temple in Hampi, told BM: “Last month, a fresh proposal was sent to the Deputy Commissioner through Ballari Assistant Commissioner. Locals have brought to our notice that people visit the temple wearing skimpy clothes. They said that implementation of a dress code is essential if the sanctity of the place has to be retained. Men are often seen visiting the temple wearing shorts. This is a prominent temple and an important place of worship. Puja and other related activities are performed throughout the day. We have submitted the proposal seeking implementation of a dress code. As of now, we have not implemented any dress code. No orders have been passed,” he said.

In case, a dress code is implemented, men will be allowed to wear trousers, dhoti, kurta, shirts and women may not be allowed to wear sleeveless clothes. Only full length pants will be allowed. As fas as dress code is concerned, there are problems with Indian and foreign devotees.
