Senior state BJP leader and the state party’s spokesperson H M Shangpliang has tendered resignation from the primary membership of the BJP on ‘personal grounds’.

Shagpliang was MLA from TMC and in November 2022 he joined BJP. He contested the Assembly Elections in February this year as a BJP candidate; however, he failed to retain the Mawsynram seat.

Shangpliang was formerly a Congress MLA, in 2021, he joined the All India Trinamool Congress party.

In his resignation letter to the BJP president, Shangpliang stated, "I would like to mention that although I would have liked to remain and serve the party earnestly, I understand that as long as nepotism prevails within the ranks of the State BJP, under the leadership of the State BJP President, it will hinder the dedicated and loyal party members from freely exercising their minds and growing within the party."

Shangpliang is likely to join National People’s Party (NPP) and eyeing to contest next year’s Lok Sabha elections. BJP is a partner of the ruling coalition in the state.

BJP State president, Ernest Mawrie said that it was Shangpliang who was practicing nepotism by requesting the party to appoint his brother in Mawsynram Mondal.
