Guru arrested on charges of attempt to murder
Vanniar Sangam President Dr S Ramadoss, J Guru was arrested today on charges of attempt to murder.
Guru, known as 'Kaduvetti' Guru, was picked up at 4.30 am from his residence at Kaduvetti in Ariyalur district.
He was later produced before the judicial magistrate at Perambalur, remanded to 15 days judicial custody and lodged in Tiruchirapalli central prison.
Guru's reported remarks that the heads of DMK leaders A Raja and S Sivasankar, a DMK MLA, would be 'chopped off' if PMK leaders were arrested had led to severing of ties between PMK and DMK on June 17.
Reacting to Guru's arrest, Ramadoss condemned it and likened the situation in Tamil Nadu to the 'Emergency era'.
The PMK leader, who rushed to Ariyalur to meet the arrested leader, in a statement here alleged that a case had been foisted against Guru. Though the charges in the FIR were bailable, Guru was later also charged with attempt to murder, which is a non-bailable offence, he said.
The attempt to murder charge was included under pressure from 'higher ups', he alleged.
He said the arrest was politically motivated and a 'murder of democracy'. He also alleged that all front ranking leaders of the PMK were being arrested after Guru's arrest.
He asked PMK workers not to get provoked by the arrests and not to give room for any violence. "We will face the situation legally. We are taking all legal steps", he said.
