JAIPUR: Thousands of Gurjars took to the streets in several cities of Rajasthan on Tuesday to court arrest in support of their demand for Schedule Tribe status for the community.

Hundreds of Gurjars in Kotputali, Pali, Chittorgarh, Kota, Jaipur rural, and Rajsamand villages were moving towards city limits to court arrest, an official said here.

About five lakh Gurjars would court arrest as part of the programme.

The Rajasthan government has created 259 temporary jails in schools, colleges, and play grounds to lodge the agitators. The state government has also made arrangements for their food and lodging, if they do not seek bail, the official said.

Twenty-two places in 14 affected districts have been turned into cantonment with deployment of CRPF, Rapid Action Force, BSF, and Rajasthan Armed Constabulary, he said, adding remaining 27 districts have been equipped with additional forces to meet any exigency.
