Gujjar storm shows no signs of easing

Even cremation of dead bodies failed to break the ice as agitating Gujjars continued blocking rail and road traffic in Rajasthan on Tuesday.

JAIPUR: Even cremation of dead bodies failed to break the ice as agitating Gujjars continued blocking rail and road traffic in Rajasthan on Tuesday. The state government which had earlier threatened Gujjars with dire consequences has now mellowed down as its warnings had only fuelled the agitation.

The Gujjar women, who laid siege of the railway track near Bandikui station in Dausa district on Sunday, continue to squat on the tracks affecting movement of trains on the Jaipur-Delhi sector. This rail route via Jaipur is the main link between North India, Rajasthan and Gujarat. We dont want any forceful expulsion of agitating women as this may complicate and aggravate the situation. Twenty trains are not running, including major trains like Rajdhani and Shatabdi, said railways senior divisional commercial manager Jayant Singh.

Meanwhile, chief minister Vasundhara Raje has once again appealed to the Gujjars for table talks. This issue can be resolved only through talks. Disruption of rail and road traffic would only cause discomfort and problems for fellow countrymen. Our government is ready for a dialogue at any point of time, she said. Criticising the state governments wait and watch ploy, the Gujjar spearhead Kirori Singh Bainsla threatened to launch the agitation in a big way.
