Gujarat to give out two free LPG cylinders a year to households in the state

The state of Gujarat announced on Monday that the government would be providing two free LPG cylinders to every household in the western state.

Announcing the decision, Gujarat Education Minister Jitu Vaghani said the government was keeping the 18 lakh housewives in the state in mind and was looking to save them some expense.

The announcement comes close on the heels of the state government's decision to cut 10% VAT on CNG and PNG. Both these measures come a short time before the Election Commission is set to announce dates for the Gujarat Assembly elections.


According to Vaghani, there is up to Rs 650 crore earmarked for the scheme, which is likely to see Rs 1,700 reach the pockets of the public.

Gujarat's BJP government is set to end its term late in 2022, with election dates to be announced soon. The national party is also embroiled in a 'freebie' debate with the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, pointing fingers at the former for their free electricity scheme in the national capital.
