Gujarat riots: Charges filed against top cop

The Gujarat govt filed a chargesheet against senior police officer Rahul Sharma for alleged misconduct in not submitting the original CDs containing cellphone call records related to the 2002 communal riots.

NEW DELHI: The Gujarat government on Saturday filed a chargesheet against senior police officer Rahul Sharma for alleged misconduct in not submitting the original CDs containing cellphone call records related to the 2002 communal riots.

“Rahul Sharma was today served the copy of the chargesheet," government spokesperson Jaynarayan Vyas said. The chargesheet was filed a day after home minister P Chidambaram said it was concerned over the government’s proposed action against Sharma.

Chidambaram had indicated the Centre could intervene in the matter if he approached it. The IPS officer has been accused of gross misconduct under Section 3(1) of All India Service Rules 1969. He has been accused of not submitting the CDs containing phone call records during the post-Godhra riots to investigating officers of Naroda Gam, Naroda Patia and Gulburg Society cases.

Sharma is charged with obtaining the phone call records even though he was neither the investigating officer nor the supervisory officer. The senior officer failed to turn in the CDs even after he was transferred from the post of DCP Control. He also failed to inform any jurisdictional court about the procurement of the CDs.
