NEW DELHI: The BJP government in Gujarat is yet to resettle 20,000 victims of the communal riots that occurred in the state five years ago.

State Chief Secretary Sudhir Mankad, who was summoned by the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), told the rights watchdog that the state government has requested financial support from the Centre, besides its relief package, for resettlement of those still in rehabilitation camps.

Official sources said Mankad informed the NCM that 30,000 of the 50,000 victims have been resettled. The remaining lives in the state government camps, which the commission had found of lacking basic facilities in October last year.

During his two-hour meeting with NCM vice-chairman M P Pinto and its members Harcharan Singh Josh, Dileep Padgaonkar, Chosphel Zotpa and Zoya Hasan, the Chief Secretary said there would be no delay in disbursement of the package once its released by the Centre.

The Centre has decided to pay an ex-gratia assistance of Rs 350,000 for each death and Rs 125,000 for each case of injury to the affected families.

"The NCM told the chief secretary that all efforts should be made to ensure safe resettlement of the victims," a commission source said.

In October last year, NCM chief Mohammad Hamid Ansari, now the UPA-Left's vice-presidential candidate, ordered an inquiry into a complaint regarding the condition of the riot rehabilitation camps.

In its report to the Centre, the NCM noted that the state government had not been able to create a conducive atmosphere for the safe return of victims to their homes.
