Gujarat Polls: Record voting means change certain in Gujarat, says Congress

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat Congress today said the record 70.75 per cent voter turn-out in the first phase of Gujarat assembly elections meant a certain regime-change.

"History proves that whenever there was a record-breaking voter turn-out, there was a change in regime...in Gujarat too voters have expressed their faith in Congress by historic voting," said Gujarat Congress chief Arjun Modhwadia here, talking to media persons.

He thanked people of the state for voting overwhelmingly "for Congress" and "against BJP", and appealed to repeat the same in the second phase of polling on December 17.

"In West Bengal, with 84 per cent voting, CPM lost. Similarly, in Tamil Nadu DMK rule ended when 76 per cent voting was recorded, and in Uttar Pradesh, with 69 per cent record voting, BSP government lost power," he said.

He also took a dig at Chief Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of Sir creek, saying, "as this CM has anticipated defeat with this unprecedented voting, he is raising the issue of Sir creek, just like in the last elections he had raised up the issues such as Mian Musharraf and 'terrorism'."
