AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat government is likely to introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the upcoming monsoon session of the state assembly.

The committee chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Desai, tasked with evaluating the need for a UCC in the state and drafting the proposed legislation, recently met Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar to brief him on its progress.

The five-member panel-constituted on February 4-was initially expected to submit its report within 45 days. Justice Desai later told the media that the committee would likely submit its recommendations within a month. Party sources say the bill could be tabled in the forthcoming session.
