AHMEDABAD: It’s time Gujarat reaps some monetary gain from garbage. The solid waste generated in the state is set to turn into a treasure of sorts.
The state government is working on Rs 300-crore solid waste management project wherein it will earn revenue to the tune of Rs 7.5 crore annually through sale of carbon credits in the international market. This is Gujarat Urban Development Corporation’s (GUDC) first venture in carbon trading under the clean development mechanism project envisaged under Kyoto Protocol agreement.
Carbon credits are generated when a company in a developing country such as India uses better technology or process, which reduces the emission of six green house gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. The reduction in emission of a GHG is calculated as carbon dioxide equivalent and the carbon credits or certified emission reductions (CERs) can be sold in the international market.
The project will not only help the corporation dispose of the solid waste but also earn some money in the process. The project will cover over 161 nagar palikas.
“To ease the solid waste collection process, different nagar palikas will be grouped in clusters. Each cluster will cover eight to nine nagar palikas,” informed a senior government official.
