Gujarat Congress looks to Gen Z, plans young candidates for 2027 Assembly polls
Gujarat Congress is considering fielding a large number of young candidates in next year’s Assembly elections, hoping to tap into the Gen Z movement after repeated electoral setbacks.

After repeated electoral setbacks across the state, Gujarat Congress is now looking to capitalise on the Gen Z movement ahead of nextyear’s Assembly election.
A top leader of the party told the ET off the record that the party is likely to field a large number of young candidates in the assembly elections due later next year.
"Youth is a major driving factor of today's political discourse," the leader said adding that the party is mulling over fielding new young faces for the next year's election.
The President of the state unit Amit Chavda and the leader of Gujarat Congress legislature party Tushar Chadhary had met the Congress High Command in Delhi last week. It is learnt that the party is finally looking at declaring the organisational structure of its state unit, which it could not settle in the last one year since the appointment of Chavda as the President of the state unit for the second time following the resignation of Shaktisinh Gohil from the post.
It may be mentioned here that Gujarat Congress had staged its best ever electoral show in 2017 riding the Patidar agitation when the party had won 77 seats. The party had then fielded the young Patidar leaders as well as other young agitators like Alpesh Thakore and Jignesh Mevani.
While in five years the party's tally had come down to its historical lowest at 17 in 2022 Gujarat election, the youth leaders Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakore had joined BJP.
