Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal called for the resignation of his Gujarat counterpart Bhupendra Patel over the Morbi bridge collapse, saying the tragedy was the result of massive corruption.

On the day PM Modi visited Morbi, Kejriwal, whose Aam Aadmi Party is emerging as the principal challenger to BJP in the run-up to the Gujarat assembly elections, referred to reports that a company that makes clocks was given the charge of renovating the suspension bridge.

"Why was a company that makes clocks given the tender of a bridge? This means he (the company's owner) had links with the party (BJP). The FIR in the case mentions neither the company nor its owners," said Kejriwal.

The AAP convenor said there were allegations that the ruling party had received a huge donation from the company's owners and that such charges needed to be probed. "The chief minister has no right to continue. He must resign and elections should be held immediately," he said.

Referring to the clean-up exercise at Morbi civil hospital ahead of the PM's visit to meet survivors of the bridge accident, Kejriwal said, "The spruce-up at hospital is a separate matter, but the matter is being covered up... Was it due to contracts being given to friends and relatives?"
