Gujarat bans film 'Padmavati', CM says ban to keep law & order

AHMEDABAD: Poll-bound Gujarat joined the list of BJP-administered states to ban Padmavati, a movie that has courted controversy over alleged scenes that may hurt Kshatriya pride, with chief minister Vijay Rupani announcing that the film will not be released till all debates and objections pertaining to it were resolved.

In a press interaction, Rupani insisted the decision has nothing to do with the on-going elections and the ban on the movie will stay till all controversies relating to it are dealt with.

However, he cited possibilities of a law and order situation arising in case the film is released as one of the reasons, thus leaving little doubt that BJP does not want to antagonise Kshatriya voters ahead of the polls.


“Today in Gujarat many communities are hurt due to the controversial aspects of the movie Padmavati. Many groups have opposed the movie and there is anger in the Kshatriya community. To avoid hurting the sentiments of any community and prevent any law and order situation from arising, we will not allow the release of the movie in Gujarat,” Rupani said.

BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh was the first state to demand that the movie not be released with chief minister Yogi Adityanath stating that it could lead to a law and order problem. Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje too has said the movie will not be released in her state.
