Keeping the momentum of BJP's aggressive election campaign in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held four public rallies across Palanpur, Modasa, Dahegam and Bavla.

Continuing his attack on opposition Congress, Modi at Bavla in Ahmedabad district said while Mahatma Gandhi had said India's soul resides in the villages, Congress folks have forgotten Gandhiji in every manner and trampled on the country's soul itself. During Congress regime, focus was rarely on villages and thus the true potential of the villages never blossomed, he claimed.

Referring to the new education policy of the union government, Modi said now students can study medicine and engineering in their mother tongues, which would help the rural students and thus empower villages. During Congress regime, the difference between village and towns were retained and the interest was in keeping them at loggerheads, he alleged.

Earlier, speaking at Dahegam in Gandhinagar district, the prime minister underlined developments in the state over last two decades and said that from 2001-02 when the BJP government started working, the state's economy has grown by 14 times. In Gandhinagar, distinguishing village from town is a difficult task, he said, adding that the day is not far when Gandhinagar, Dahegam and Kalol would become important centres of economic activities of the state.

Modi also dwelt upon the importance of GIFT City in Gandhinagar and said about 200,000 people would come to work here and would eventually stay in Kalol and Dahegam areas.

In Modasa, Modi alleged that Congress has perpetually kept Gujarat backward and while there was an agitation seeking railway connectivity between Modasa and Kapadbhanj, there were several leaders who were elected from the region, but they never intended to work.

"There is Congress government in Rajasthan but do good news come from Rajasthan?" he asked. "The people of Rajasthan gave responsibility to Congress and if they couldn't do good for them, what will they do for Gujarat?"

Earlier in the day, at Palanpur in north Gujarat, Modi spoke of various development measures of the central and state governments and laid emphasis on tourism, environment, water, cattle and nutrition - issues closely linked with the region. He also talked about how tourism has evolved in Gujarat, attracting people from all over.
