Groups in Meghalaya resume stir demanding implementation of ILP

GUWAHATI: After months of restrain following COVID-19 induced situation, groups in Meghalaya resumed their protests of demanding implementation of an Inner Line Permit (ILP) system across Meghalaya.

Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) purview exempts some areas under ILP. The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) is spearheading movement for introduction of ILP.

It has announced resumption of stir since Friday. The organization demonstrated black flag across the state.


CoMSO Secretary Roy Kupar Synrem said, "On December 4 said we will hold sit-in demonstrations in all 11 districts and in some sub-divisional headquarters besides in Shillong. We have been asking all 60 Meghalaya MLAs and three MPs of the state to hold sit-in demonstrations in Delhi to ensure that the ILP is enforced in the state soon.

The Meghalaya Assembly last year passed a resolution for introduction of ILP system.

The organization has threatened to intensify stir in coming months if ILP is not introduced.

ILP is in force in Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, and later Manipur was brought under it as well.

The central government had earlier announced that the CAA would not apply to the ILP and the Tribal Autonomous District Council (TADC) areas.

The Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation (BEFR) Act of 1873 prohibits all citizens of India from entering ILP protected areas without a valid ILP.
