Govt to push for World Heritage Site status to Red Fort

After taking the Red Fort back from the army, government is all set to push for World Heritage Site status to the historic fort at UNESCO meet in New Zealand next week.

NEW DELHI: After taking the Red Fort back from the army, government is all set to push for World Heritage Site status to the historic fort at UNESCO meet in New Zealand next week.
Red Fort will be competing with 44 other sites nominated by 38 countries from round the world for the prestigious inscription. In the normal course only one site awarded world heritage status in a year.
Conservation enthusiasts have long battled to free the red sandstone monument from army, graffiti, vandalism and swarms of rickshaws and squatters in and around the sprawling monument.
Last year India nominated the largest freshwater Majuli Islands in Brahmaputra river in Assam but it failed to make to the world heritage status. Quirkish currents of the river threaten to erode and wipe the island off map some day.
"Though the management plan of Indian government for islands was in place, it could not furnish a convincing legal framework for the protection of world heritage status," a UN official told the media.
The officials were tightlipped on how strong are India's changes this time.
The UNESCO's World Heritage Committee is slated meet at Christchurch, New Zealand, from 23 June to 2 July.
