Govt to finance hostel construction for SC girl students
Govt will bear the entire cost of construction of hostels to reduce the drop out rate of girl students belonging to scheduled castes.

NEW DELHI: Seeking to reduce the drop out rate of girl students belonging to scheduled castes, the government will bear the entire cost of construction of hostels for them.
However, in the case of boys' hostels, the prevailing pattern of Central assistance would continue -- 50 per cent for states, 100 per cent for union territories, 90 per cent for central universities and 45 per cent for other universities.
As per a decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs here today, the government would also provide one-time grant of Rs 2,500 per student for making provisions of a cot, a table and a chair for each hosteler, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said after the meeting.
The focus would be on construction of hostels for students pursuing middle and higher secondary education, he said.
However, hostels can also be constructed for students in colleges, he said, adding that the hostels will be completed within two years from the date of sanction of the project.
"The primary objective of the decision is to attract the implementing agencies for undertaking hostel construction programme, especially for SC girls towards the broader vision of containment and reduction of their drop out rate," Chidambaram said.
Panchayati raj institutions would be involved in the matter of selection of site and overseeing the functioning of the hostels, he said.
Priority in the allotment of hostel accommodation would be given to SC students whose parents are municipal workers, the Finance Minister said.
