NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday cleared the construction of a 608-km road network along the Sino-India border stretching from Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir to Diphu La in Arunachal Pradesh and the task to be completed in six years.
The decision was taken at Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and attended among others by Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Finance Minister P Chidambaram.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Mukherjee said the CCS has decided to construct roads at various points along the India-China border with the financial involvement of Rs 912 crore.
The executing authority, Border Roads Organisation, had originally indicated that the roads would be completed in seven years time but "the CCS directed it to compress the timeframe and finish the work in six years," Mukherjee said.
He said the BRO has been asked to take help from other agencies who had the competence in the road construction area.
Asked whether any other matter was taken up for discussion by the CCS, Mukherjee made it clear "there was only one issue and that was the construction of roads along the India-China border. No other matter was discussed."
