Govt to bring special marriage act for Sikhs

Government is planning to bring in a special marriage act for the Sikhs, a long standing demand of the community.

NEW DELHI: Government is planning to bring in a special marriage act for the Sikhs, a long standing demand of the community.

This was stated by Law and Justice Minister H R Bhardwaj in Rajya Sabha today.

He said the Government has taken note of demands in this regard from various Sikh organisations and "there should not be a problem" in introducing such an act.

"We will bring it soon," he said replying to supplementaries.

To a separate question, he said the Government has no plans to make registration of Hindu Marriages compulsory under the law.

He said the Supreme Court had directed that marriage of all persons should be registered compulsorily in their respective states and the "matter is being carefully examined in its full ramifications."
