NEW DELHI: The government on Thursday denied media reports that it was not taking action to trace black money allegedly stashed in the tax haven of Liechtenstein by some Indians. The government said it has already taken up the issue with German tax authorities.

Finance minister P Chidambaram told reporters on Thursday that he had written to the leader of the opposition L K Advani, briefing him about the steps taken by the UPA government to get information on black money by Indians from the German government.

He said the Finance ministry has written to the German tax office to make available information relating to Indian taxpayers, if any, in the data with Liechtenstein Bank.

Mr Chidambaram said his reply to Mr Advani was in response to a letter written by the BJP leader to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The German central tax office replied to us in March 2008 that they are not in a position to give (information) immediately but will inform us as soon as they get it, the finance minister said. India and Germany already have a double taxation avoidance agreement.
