NEW DELHI: A commemorative coin of Rs 200 denomination and a circulation coin of Rs 10 was today released by Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma to mark the martyrdom day of 1857 mutiny hero Tatya Tope.

"Today is matyrdom day of Tope who was the hero of 1857 revolt... The government along with the 125 crore people of India salute him with pride," he said.

During the Sepoy Mutiny, Sharma said, Tope fought and gave his important contribution for the independence of the country.

Ramachandra Pandurang Tope, popularly known as Tatya Tope, was captured by the British forces on April 7, 1859 and after a hurried trial for waging war against the East India Company, was hanged to death on April 18, 1859 at Shivpuri in Madhya Pradesh.

Meanwhile, an official release said the government is also considering constructing a memorial to Tope at Yeola in Nasik and a war museum in Bhopal in association with the respective state governments.
