NEW DELHI: Government on Tuesday downplayed street protests by Left parties on the multi-nation naval exercises which also has participation of the US, saying it was a part of their programme.

"That is a part of their (Left parties') programme," External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters when asked to comment on the street protests by the Left parties launched in several states today.

He said the Left parties have a view on the issue but the naval exercises have been on since 1992.

The Left has claimed that the strategic alliance the government was seeking to cement with the US has "serious implications" for the country's economy and the well-being of the people.

Pamphlets, distributed during the party's campaign against the joint naval exercise, said the civil nuclear deal with the US was not a stand-alone agreement but part of a "wider strategic alliance to make India the outpost of American interests in Asia".
