NEW DELHI: The government hopes to break the deadlock in Parliament on Tuesday when its both Houses meet next after Ram Navami holiday, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel, who has been meeting opposition leaders to break the impasse, said today.

"The government is making serious efforts to see to it that Parliament functions normally," Goel said, adding that there is also a "growing public pressure" on political parties as people expect them to do their job.

Goel has meet several opposition leaders, including Ghulam Nabi Azad of the Congress, V Maitreyan of the AIADMK and TDP leader Y S Chowdary, as part of the government's efforts to break the deadlock. He also met Naresh Gujaral of the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Several retiring members are expected to make a farewell speech in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

The government hopes that opposition parties will also help it in the passage of some bills in the Upper House as they did on Friday when they allowed the passage of the Payment of Gratuity Bill without any debate.

Around 10 bills, which have been passed by the Lok Sabha, are pending in the Rajya Sabha.

There are also other important bills as well, official sources said. Those include the contentious triple talaq legislation, motor vehicle act and whistle blower protection bill among others.

Proceedings in both the Houses have been a washout since the second leg of the Budget Session started on March 5. The government has, however, managed to get a few bills, including the Union Budget, in the Lok Sabha passed amid a din.
