Govt hopes for early approval of safeguards pact at IAEA

Ahead of the crucial August one meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, India hoped the UN Atomic watchdog will approve the safeguards agreement at the earliest.

NEW DELHI: Ahead of the crucial August one meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors, India on Sunday hoped the UN Atomic watchdog will approve the safeguards agreement at the earliest to take the Indo-US nuclear deal to its logical conclusion.

Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar said he was hopeful of the IAEA and the NSG clearance for the deal.

"Lets hope that the IAEA approval comes through fast. We hope that it should happen soon," Kakodkar said on the sidelines of a function here.

Asked whether Pakistan can create hurdle at the IAEA, he evaded a direct reply saying he was optimistic about its clearance at the Board of Governors meeting.

Pakistan, which is a member of the IAEA Board, has raised various questions over the initiative, particularly the hurry with which it is being pursued.

On whether he was optimistic about clearance of the India specific safeguards agreement at the IAEA in its meeting on August one, Kakodkar said he was hopeful.
