Govt forms IT Standing Committee, names Shashi Tharoor as head
BENGALURU: The Government formed a Standing Committee for Information Technology comprising of 31 Members of Parliament (MP) from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha with Congress MP Shashi Tharoor as Chairperson of the committee.

The committee has an overwhelming representation from members from the ruling party Bhartiya Janata Party, followed by Indian National Congress, Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party.

Tharoor replaces BJP MP Anurag Thakur as head of the IT standing committee. Tharoor was earlier heading the committee on external affairs in the previous term.


The IT Standing Committee may be asked to look into the Data Protection Bill whenever it is tabled in the parliament.

Some of the prominent members of the committee were former sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Zee Entertainment owner Subhash Chandra and Bangalore South MP Tejasvi Surya.
