The Union Government and European Commission in the next few days will sign a programme aimed at reforms in education, health and family welfare in Chhattisgarh and management of water resources in Rajasthan.


NEW DELHI: The Union Government and European Commission in the next few days will sign a programme aimed at reforms in education, health and family welfare in Chhattisgarh and management of water resources in Rajasthan.

The initiative, called State Partnership Programme will supplement the efforts of the Centre and the two state governments to accelerate progress in the Millennium Development Goals, European Commission ambassador Francisco Da Camara Gomes said at a seminar on tribal here.

EC's sector budget support and technical assistance will expedite the Chhattisgarh government's efforts to develop and implement comprehensive reforms in the education sector and deepen reform initiatives in the health and family welfare sector, Gomes said, but did not divulge the size of the programme.

The programmes also intends to create an enabling pro-poor environment policy framework and enhanced capacities, specifically addressing non-timber forest-based tribal livelihoods in Chhattisgarh, he said.

In Rajashtan, EC grant under the programme will support the state government's support in refining and implementing its new water resources policy, Gomes said.

The new policy aims at an integrated management approach and a larger role for local communities in water resources management.

A novel feature of the programme is its support to the Rajasthan government's multi-stakeholder consultation and awareness campaign to ensure public participation in the design and implementation of the water policy, the EC ambassador said.
