Governor defends Mamata Banerjee govt

In defence of the Mamata govt in W Bengal, Governor M K Narayanan today said that law and order in the state was 'not alarming'.

KOLKATA: In apparent defence of the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal, where the opposition CPI(M) has raised a furore over the killing of two party leaders in Burdwan, West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan today said that law and order in the state was 'not alarming'.

"No, the law and order situation is not alarming," Narayanan told reporters in reply to a question on the sidelines of the convocation of the Bengal Engineering and Science University in adjoining Howrah district.

Stating that the police would take action on the killing of two CPI(M) leaders Pradip Tah and Kamal Gayen, the governor said "It is too early to pre-judge who, what and when."

Asked to comment on the recent remarks by the chief minister terming the alleged rape of a woman in the metropolis after she left a night club on Park Street, as a "fabricated story", the governor said, Banerjee might have been trying to "defuse the situation".

"She was probably trying to defuse the situation. I don't know who should speak and when. It is not something you can take a decision on," Narayanan said.
