Government to pay Rs 5 lakh each to the families of martyrs of Assam agitation
GUWAHATI: Almost 31 year after the Assam accord was inked, BJP led government will provide ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the family of martyrs of Assam agitation.

All Assam Students Union (Aasu) which spearheaded six year long anti foreigners movement (1979-1985) was signatory of Assam accord. According to Aasu , over 850 people have lost their lives in the agitation.

Government of Assam will award Rs. 5 lakh ex-gratia to the families of martyrs of Assam on December 10, 2016. Decision in this regard was taken during a meeting held on Wednesday.

The list for the ex-gratia payment will be prepared by AASU and Swahid Nirjyatita Nyas and will be finalized in consultation with the state Government.

The meeting also decided for setting up of a separate office under the Assam Accord Implementation Department to ensure smooth implementation of various provisions of the Accord. Government will erect a memorial in Guwahati depicting the contribution of the martyrs.
