NEW DELHI: Government is planning to construct 7,000 kms of new national highways by including coastal and border areas under the Bharatmala Pariyojna, Lok Sabha was informed today.

"The Ministry has taken up detailed review of national highways network with a view to improve connectivity in border areas, including coastal boundary and connectivity covering development of about 7,000 kms of new national highway under the Bharatmala Pariyojna in consultation with state governments," Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said during question hour, amidst unrelenting slogan-shouting by Congress members in the Well.

Gadkari said that the proposed programme has been envisaged to include development of road connectivity to some non-major ports also.

"However, the project is yet to be formally launched. It is premature to indicate details of road connectivity to non-major ports to be improved under the programme," he said.
