NEW DELHI: Government has initiated action against 26 NGOs in current fiscal after finding irregularities in receiving foreign contribution while 14 foreign donors have been placed under prior approval category.

Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told Lok Sabha that on receipt of adverse inputs against a particular foreign donor, banks are advised through Reserve Bank of India to seek prior approval of the government for crediting of funds in to receipt account from such donor.

"So far 14 foreign donors have been placed under prior approval category," he said.

Rijiju said as and when information regarding receipt and utilisation of foreign contribution is received, inspection of records and accounts of the NGOs is carried out to ascertain violations of the provisions of the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act.

"During the current financial year, inspection of accounts and records of 26 such associations have been carried out and action initiated against them," he said.
