NEW DELHI: A total of Rs 193.38 crore has been spent by the government for conservation and maintenance of protected monuments in the country during 2014-15 till February, Lok Sabha was informed today.

Union Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma said during 2013-14, Rs 169.63 crore had been spent for conservation and maintenance of all such protected monuments.

Sharma said conservation work of protected monuments is a continuous process and depending upon the site requirements, every year, special repair works are executed on identified monuments whereas maintenance and upkeep works are attended on all protected monuments as per the availability of resources.

The Minister said there are 3,685 protected monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India and it regularly attended the conservation and maintenance works in addition to providing necessary security.
