Government issues showcause notice to Belgaum City Corporation
The Karnataka Government today issued a showcause notice to Belgaum City Corporation, asking why the civic body should not be "superseded".
The notice was issued under Section 99 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, outlining 20 instances of dereliction of duty and irregularities, including failure to utilise funds granted to the Corporation, Minister for Urban Development S Suresh Kumar told reporters here.
Setting the stage for superseding the corporation in the wake of the Mayor and some other Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi members adopting 'anti-Kannada' stance, the notice pointed out that the civic body has not been functioning in accordance with the KMC act.
During 2008-09,the Corporation had held only six meetings as against the requirement of 12 meetings, Kumar said.
In 2009-10, the corporation council met seven times and in 2010-11 only twice, he said.
During 2011-12, only two out of the eight meetings to be convened have been held and standing committee meetings have not been called so far, he said.
The Corporation has also not prepared its action plan during 2009-10 and 2010-11 and failed to utilise grants released by the government, he said.
The corporation has been asked to reply to the notice within 15 days.
