Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday claimed that the Modi government was making a big event of the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency only to divert public attention from his government's failures on the administrative front. He alleged that the Election Commission has been reduced to a "puppet" but didn't commit on whether Rahul Gandhi will accept the Election Commission's invite for a discussion on his charges against the election process in Maharashtra.

"People are now concerned about rising inflation, unemployment, corruption and failures on the economic front. To hide their failures, to not expose their weakness, PM Modi is staging this drama," Kharge said at a press conference organised to counter the government event. He maintained that the government was talking about the violation of the Constitution during the Emergency only because the Congress had taken out a "Save Constitution Yatra". "After ignoring the Constitution for years, they are suddenly pretending to care about it," he said.

Kharge said Indira Gandhi herself had apologised for the Emergency and after that, people had voted back the Congress with a huge majority.

He alleged that the BJP and RSS had no role in the freedom movement. He said the country is currently facing "an undeclared Emergency" and accused the government of undermining democratic institutions and suppressing dissent.
