Government committed to protect farmers

Kerala Revenue Minister K P Rajendran on Tuesday assured the members of assembly that no farmer would be evicted from their land under the Cardamom Hill Reserve (CHR) area in Idukki district.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Revenue Minister K P Rajendran on Tuesday assured the members of assembly that no farmer would be evicted from their land under the Cardamom Hill Reserve (CHR) area in Idukki district.
The state government affidavit to be filed in the Apex Court in the CHR land case would specify that land under CHR belonged to Revenue Department and right of protection of forest and trees rest with Forest Department, Rajendran said while replying to a calling attention on the matter.
The Government was committed to issue pattas to those who have settled in the area before January 1, 1977 and a patta mela would be held in April in Idukki district, he said.
Farmers need not have any apprehension in this regard. However, the government would take steps to evict those illegally encroached upon forest and revenue lands in th name of tourist development, he said.
The CHR case filed by an environmental group had sought an order from the Apex Court restricting the government from issuing title deeds over the land with 'encroachers' in the region contending that CHR land comes under 'reserved forest status'.
