The new system, comprising thermal imaging, fiber optics communication, radars scanner and sensors, will be installed at the eight rivulets along the IB, said officials. As per MHA, there is about 145.876 km of unfenced riverine stretch which is about 6.3% of the total Indo-Pak Border.
"An investigations into the movements of the terrorist killed in encounters with security forces revealed they came through these riverine stretches," said a senior official. Besides these riverines, the 202-km border with Pakistan is secured with regular patrolling, added the official.
According to BSF, the number of intrusion reported along IB in the first quarter of 2015 were only 10, however, the the infiltrators managed to cause heavy casualty on March 20 when dressed in army fatigues they entered a police station in Kathua and killed three security personnel besides injuring 11 others.
A day later, the militants launched another attack on an army camp in Sambha district where one person was injured. Between 2014 and 2015, the number of infiltration attempts on the IB is more than the attempts made on LoC.
