Gogoi promises action against Mahanta if found guilty

Action will be taken against former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta if he is found responsible for the secret killings during his tenure as CM by the Justice KN Saikia Commission, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said on Friday.

GUWAHATI: Action will be taken against former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta if he is found responsible for the secret killings during his tenure as CM by the Justice KN Saikia Commission, Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said on Friday.

A committee of legal experts would be constituted within a month to go into the commission’s report and it would decide on what action should be taken legally on the findings, Mr Gogoi told reporters.

“Definitely, we will take action. The expert committee will cover police personnel also. The police will reinvestigate 20 cases of secret killings and fix responsibility,” Mr Gogoi said. The report, tabled on Thursday, indicted Mahanta for carrying out “secret killings” (of relatives of Ulfa cadres) during his tenure as chief minister.

“It is in connivance with the then Mahanta-led AGP government that heinous crimes took place. Never in any other part of the country did such crimes occur. No action was taken by the then government on the police personnel also,” Mr Gogoi said.
