Goa MLA gets bail, out of jail
Goa MLA Atanasio Monserrate, who spent nearly two days in police custody for allegedly leading a mob attack on Panjim police station was granted bail.

PANAJI: Goa MLA Atanasio (Babush) Monserrate, who spent nearly two days in police custody for allegedly leading a mob attack on Panjim police station, was granted bail by the session court.
The police had charged the controversial MLA with attempt to murder for the attack on Tuesday night. Babush���s wife Jennifer Monserrate, who was also booked in the offence, along with three others, and has been in judicial custody, was also granted bail.
The session court on Thursday granted bail to all the accused on a surety of Rs 25,000 each and on condition that they visit the police station daily for the next seven days.
Babush is also facing a charge for attacking a Youth Congress rally last December, which had left five persons injured, apart from vandalising public property. The rally was in support of the state government's upcoming Rajiv Gandhi IT Habitat to be developed in the prime sea-facing locality of Dona Paula, something Babush has been vehemently opposed to.
Meanwhile, his arrest has already taken on a political hue, with parties wading into the row to derive some mileage. The development is significant, considering that Babush���s unconditional support as an unattached legislator of the United Goans Democratic Party is critical to the stability of the Congress��� Digambar Kamat government in the state.
However, earlier he had supported the BJP and even served as a minister under the then chief minister Manohar Parrikar.
The BJP again seems to be wooing the colourful MLA. The party has now demanded judicial inquiry into the alleged ill-treatment meted out to Babush. But given the political dynamics, the ruling Congress cannot afford to rub Babush the wrong way. Efforts are on resolve the crisis without offending the police force.
