Goa may ban agri land sale to outsiders
Land sale to outsiders in Goa could become a thing of the past, as the state govt is considering a ban on the sale of land to outsiders in order to preserve the state’s unique identity and culture.
Alarmed by the large number of non-Goans settling in the state, the government will soon be bringing in a legislation to bar outsiders both Goans and non-Goans from purchasing agricultural or orchid lands. We will go through the legislation passed by states like Karnataka and Uttarakhand before drafting our own. This will help save our land from being sold to outsiders, chief minister Digambar Kamat said on Friday, the last day of the monsoon session of the state legislative Assembly.
Some members raised the issue of local schools admitting non-Goan students in South Goa. Official estimates suggest that of the states 14 lakh population, nearly five lakh are from outside Goa, which is an alarming situation and can render Goans a minority in their own state, senior Congress MLA Mauvin Gudhino said.
Citing sluggish economic growth, the Assembly pleaded with the Centre to bail out the state by granting more aid.
It has also passed a resolution strongly recommending granting a special status to Goa on the lines of Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
The resolution passed on Friday seeks special status for Goa to conserve the limited land available and to ensure that the state preserves its unique identity.
