GK Pillai is new home secretary
Commerce secretary G K Pillai, a Kerala-cadre IAS officer of the 1972 batch, was appointed as the new home secretary.
He is likely to join MHA as an officer on special duty (OSD) next week and will take over as home secretary after incumbent Madhukar Gupta retires on June 30 after a three-month extension. His stint as OSD is aimed at ensuring a smooth takeover of the key post.
Mr Pillai, who had earlier worked in the home ministry as joint secretary (north-east), would have a fixed two-year tenure in the home ministry. He is expected to oversee the implementation of key initiatives in the MHA, including the setting up of a National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), strengthening of MAC and SMACs, issue of unique identity cards to all citizens by 2011 and intelligence-based operations planned against Left-wing extremists and violence-mongering north-eastern insurgent groups.
Meanwhile, disinvestment secretary Rahul Khullar, a 1975-batch IAS officer of the UT cadre, is likely to replace Mr Pillai as the new commerce secretary. Mr Khullar was a special secretary in the commerce ministry before he moved out as the disinvestment secretary.
