Give North East share of China's investment to India: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi

GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has lashed out at prime minister Narendra Modi for ignoring Northeast India during the recent visit of Chinese president Xi Jinping to India. Gogoi said despite having strong cultural ties with China, the Northeast was not given importance during Xi’s visit.

“Ahom king Sukaphaa came to Assam from South China. This proves the historical links between Assam and China. However, the PM did not give much importance to the region and its people during the Chinese presidents’ visit.”

The Ahoms ruled Assam for over 600 years. Gogoi said the Gujarat police kept away hotel staff hailing from the Northeast when Xi visited Ahmedabad to thwart anti-China protests, adding that this was an insult to the region’s people.

Junior home affairs minister Kiren Rijiju, a native of Arunachal Pradesh, was tacitly kept away, he said.
