NEW DELHI: The Samajwadi Party, which has of late been snuggling up to the Congress, on Thursday indicated that it was not be averse to backing the Indo-US nuclear deal if the Manmohan Singh government came up with a new logic of fact in support of its bid.
``We stand opposed to the nuclear deal, SP leader and Rajya Sabha member Shahid Siddiqui said here on Thursday amid the governments confrontation with Left parties on the issue.
``But if the government comes up with some new logic or fact about it, then the party may reconsider its stand on the deal, Mr Siddiqui added. If the UPA government does come up with some new facts related to the deal, then, the SP leader said, his party could ``take a decision which would be beneficial to the country.
The decision, Mr Siddiqui contended, ``would be above any political considerations, as it is something which is of national interest.
Mr Siddiquis formulation, though not exactly new, made it clear that the Left parties could not expect any unqualified support on the deal from the SP which, till the other day, used to describe itself as the natural ally of the CPM and its coalition partners.
