Give legal cover to NRI brides: NCW

The National Commission for Women has asked the govt to ensure legal protection to NRI brides.

NEW DELHI: Concerned over the growing number of disputes in NRI marriages, the National Commission for Women on Monday asked the government to take diplomatic measures to ensure legal protection to women marrying overseas. It also asked Indian embassies to play a pro-active role in the matter.

‘‘Since last year, we have received 15 written complaints, and the number of verbal complaints have increased 10-fold. We have been meeting distressed parents and relatives during our visits to states,’’ NCW chairperson Girija Vyas said.

The majority of the complaints came from countries like the US, UK and Canada. The commission members said the maximum number of complaints are from Punjab, but parts of Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh are also affected. The Indian authorities face problems due to international legal barriers.

The immediate step that needs to be taken is to ensure that marriages are registered and that this is intimated to the Indian embassies in the respective countries. ‘‘Both the Indian embassies and Indian socio-cultural institutions need to play a pro-active role in helping to check the records of the prospective NRI grooms’ marital status, salary and employment,’’ Vyas said. In view of the large number of cases, the commission, together with the ministry of overseas Indian affairs and ministry of women and child development, will organise a conference in Chandigarh from Tuesday.
