Gillani's son wedding coincides with oath ceremony

PPP leader Yousuf Raza Gillani's elevation to the post of Pakistan's prime minister has coincided with the marriage of his son.

ISLAMABAD: PPP leader Yousuf Raza Gillani's elevation to the post of Pakistan's prime minister has coincided with the marriage of his son.

Gillani, who is set to be elected prime minister in the National Assembly as his party and its allies have a comfortable majority, is expected to rush to the southern port city of Karachi later in the day for his son Abdul Qadir Gillani's wedding.

The future premier's son is getting married to the granddaughter of spiritual leader Pir Pagaro, who heads the PML-F party that has five members in the National Assembly.

The PML-F has traditionally been a bitter rival of the PPP, though relations between the families of Gillani and Pir Pagaro go back several decades.

Gillani too belongs to a spiritual family that is descended from Hazrat Musa Pak, a Sufi spiritual leader from Iran.

Gillani's mother and Pir Pagaro's ex-wife are sisters. The matrimonial alliance might lead to the PML-F voting for Gillani in the election for the post of prime minister.

There were reports that the presidency might make a special exception to allow Gillani to use a VIP aircraft to travel to Karachi and back as he has to be back in Islamabad in time for the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow morning.

Ordinarily, a prime minister can use the VIP aircraft only after being administered the oath.
