In his 73rd Independence Day speech on August 15, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged people to shun single-use plastic.
Soon, buying one-litre milk packets will make more sense as the Modi government has asked dairy firms to incentivise these over the smaller packs.

The dairies have also been told to halve plastic use by Gandhi Jayanti (2nd October).

In a meeting yesterday, the Animal Husbandry & Dairying Secretary Atul Chaturvedi requested dairy federations like Amul and Mahanand to encourage reuse of plastic milk pouches.

"Reduce consumption of plastics by subsidizing price of 1 litre pack over ½ litre pack, rebate to customers for bringing back plastics, reuse of pouches for users such as Road construction, recyclers," he said in a statement.

Though the statement says nothing about hiking prices of half-litre packs, The Print has quoted some officials saying that the dairies have been asked to increase prices of these small packets to discourage people from buying them.
