Germany welcomes China-Dalai Lama talks

BERLIN: Germany welcomed on Friday a surprise announcement by Chinese state media that Beijing would reopen talks with a representative of the Dalai Lama following last month's unrest in Tibet.

"We emphatically welcome this step," foreign ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger told a news conference. "We hope very much that this can contribute to resolving conflict in Tibet."

German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier had pressed Beijing in three telephone calls in recent weeks with his Chinese counterparts to hold talks, Jaeger said.

China has come under intense foreign pressure to hold talks with the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader since rioting erupted in the regional capital Lhasa last month, spreading to other areas populated by Tibetans.

The surprise revelation, amid intense international pressure for dialogue less than four months before Beijing hosts the Olympic Games, was immediately welcomed by a spokesman for the Dalai Lama.
