German Chancellor expresses willingness to aid Mumbai

Germany would be willing to extend assistance to Mumbai to help it deal with urban problems that the country's financial capital is facing presently, Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday said here.

MUMBAI: Germany would be willing to extend assistance to Mumbai to help it deal with urban problems that the country's financial capital is facing presently, Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday said here.

Attending a function where she presented the Deutsche Bank Urban Age Award to two city projects in Mumbai, Merkel said there were problems that the city was facing presently and Germany would provide any assistance it can.

Speaking in German, Merkel also spoke of the problems faced in Germany of integrating members from various communities.

The Chancellor who is in the city on a two-day-long visit also presented the USD 10,000 award which is to be shared by the two recipient organisations, the Triratna Prerana Mandal and Waterfront, both of whom have done projects in the city's suburbs.

A special commendation was also given to the Urban Design Research Institute which had executed the Fort Management Project in south Mumbai.
