Geelani arrested, shifted to Central Jail

Authorities on Sunday formally arrested chairman of Hurriyat's hardline faction.

SRINAGAR: Authorities on Sunday formally arrested detained chairman of hardline faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani and shifted him to the Central Jail in Srinagar, officials said.

Geelani, who was detained in Humhama police station yesterday, was shifted to Central Jail after police obtained a week-long judicial remand from court, they said.

He was detained yesterday as a precautionary measure in view of apprehension of breach of peace during a special prayer meeting convened by him at Hazratbal Shrine later in the day, they said.

Geelani has been booked under section 151 and 107. He was also booked under these sections last month as well but was released under court orders.
