GEAC meeting to discusss GM food imports
The much debated issue of illegal GM food imports will be discussed tomorrow at a meeting of the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), the apex body for the regulation of such food products.
The global NGO Greenpeace has been alleging that a food item being sold by a popular foreign firm in India, contained genetically modified ingredients.
"Issues regarding the safety of GM products, promoted for human consumption, remain a cause for concern and many countries in the world (including the EU) continue to restrict GM from entering their country.
"It is surprising that while India has in place regulatory mechanisms designed to control and restrict the entry of GM food products, these regulations have been flouted blatantly in the case of this firm," the NGO has alleged.
An official from the environment ministry said the committee will hear representation from Greenpeace regarding illegal GM food imports.
The meeting will also consider proposals regarding certain pharmaceutical manufacture, large-scale field trials of Bt cotton expressing new gene/events, applications for MLRT/Strip trials and experimental seed production of transgenic crops expressing new genes/events during the coming Kharif season, the official said.
