Gas cracker proj to bring opportunities for Assam: PM
Assam remains top priority for the UPA government and projects like the gas cracker will bring development opportunities for the state, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Monday.
LEPATKATA (ASSAM): Assam remains top priority for the UPA government and projects like the gas cracker will bring development opportunities for the state, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Monday.
"The Assam Accord (of 1985) conceived, among other things, important initiatives for the rapid development of Assam. The Assam Gas Cracker project is a manifestation of that promise...it is unfortunate that it has taken more than 15 years to deliver on the promise," Singh said after laying the foundation stone of the Rs 5460.61 crore project.
PM asked for the project to be put on super fast track and a specific time-table be drawn for completing it, even before the its target of five years.
"Projects like these bring new opportunities for development of Assam. I hope they usher in an era of peace and prosperity," he said.
The project, he said, will generate over 600 new jobs in the factory itself and offer indirect employment in downstream for the plastics and polymer industry.
The plastic consumption in Assam is only 1 kg per person as against the national average of 4.5 kilogrammes per person.
We will expect the consumption in the region to increase, Singh said, adding that he expected substantial investments in setting up of over 500 downstream plastic processing plants in the nearby areas.
